Italy’s deputy foreign minister Emanuela Del Re has approved 1.5 million euros of emergency aid to Syrian refugees in Jordan via the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
The Italian aid will go towards healthcare for refugees in Jordan’s Zatari and Azraq camps, the statement said.
There are over 672,500 Syrian refugees in Jordan, according to the UN. The sprawling Zatari camp, close to Jordan’s northern border with Syria is home to some 78,500 refugees, nearly 20 percent of whom are under five years old.
Azraq, which lies in the desert in the northern Zarqa governorate, houses around 40,700 Syrian refugees, mostly children, of whom 22 percent are under-fives.
